Episode 83 - Rebel with a Cause

Share it Please
So internet, 1 month of employment and I've already been sent to the equivalent of the principle's office; which by the way is somewhere I have never been sent before.  I have managed to stay out of trouble for 28 years of life, but only 4 weeks of grown-up-ness.  For real, I never got a detention in high school!   In sixth grade I had the distinction of being the only student in the entire grade who never had to sign the dreaded "blue book" for those who had forgotten to do their homework.  A spotless record!  Tarnished!

So, what did I do that resulted in reprimand?  I told an anonymous stranger that they were beautiful via sticky note.  Yep.  Truly appalling.  I know.

Let me start at the beginning.  Eating disorder awareness week is coming up and a coworker asked if I'd like to participate in putting together some type of creative/fun workshop for our staff and the staff of the adjoining hospital.  Since, hey, I like fun, I agreed! After a brief internet search I came across some really neat ideas; one of which was from this blog: Operation Beautiful
Basically, you write something positive and promoting self-acceptance or positive body image on a sticky note and secretly leave it in a public place for a random stranger to find and hopefully be made just a little bit happier.  It was cute!  So, for a week we wrote these notes and left them around our building and the hospital with plans to ask participants at the workshop if they saw the notes and how they made them feel.  Awesome right?  Apparently not.  Check out this email that was sent out from hospital admin to all staff :

Subject: Pink Heart Sticky Notes

Throughout the hospital pink heart sticky notes have been posted with various sayings and a website address. This address takes you to an eating disorder website.  A few staff members indicated that they saw two girls posting these notes.  While this is a harmless activity we are still a public building and we can’t have people just hanging signs without permission.  Should any of you see these girls please ask them to come see me.

Oh, geeze.  Busted.  Apparently posting sticky notes in hallways is a "no no".  Who knew?  Look at me being all rebellious!

On another note, check out what Dawson and I had for dinner tonight!

Southwest BLTs and Roasted Blue Cheese Potatoes

Quick and easy yum-ness!
Sandwiches:

4 slices of whole wheat bread, toasted
4 slices bacon, cooked
1 tomato, sliced
2 handfuls spinach
1 avocado, mashed in a bowl
1/2 tsp lime juice
1/2 tsp hot sauce
1 pinch of each salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and cumin

These are pretty straight forward.  Mix the smooshy avocado, the lime juice, hot sauce and spices in a bowl then spread the resulting deliciousness on to the toast.  Top this with tomato slices, bacon, spinach and another slices of avocado-mush-covered toast and you're done!

Potatoes:

2 cups of baby potatoes, halved
2 tbsp canola oil
about 1/2 tbsp of each paprika, cumin and garlic powder
salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 cup blue cheese salad dressing
3 green onions, diced

Preheat your oven to 425 F then start prepping your potatoes.  First drizzle the oil over them and sprinkle them with all of the spices.  Give them a good massage to coat them well and the stick 'em in the hot oven for about 15 minutes.  When the come out, drizzle with blue cheese dressing and sprinkle with green onion - its like confetti! Woo!  Party potatoes!

Seriously though, I still think Operation Beautiful is an awesome idea and that you should all participate...just maybe not in your local hospital.  Apparently you need written permission to post sticky notes in a hospital....

Bureaucracy at it's best...
